Falling right in the middle between style and performance—the Evolv Cruzer could be your next favorite shoe. With a 100% cotton upper and a stylish design, they were definitely made for a night out on the town, but more importantly, they perform better than most approach shoes, we’ve tested, on the market.
The outsole is made of TRAX rubber and has an edging platform on the front. We’ve tested TRAX rubber on the Evolv Shamans and the Evolv Nexxo, and I’m a firm believer that it’s some of the best climbing rubber on the market. It’s actually surprising what these will stick to. They would be more than adequate for a quick run up a flatiron, or other class 5 approaches.
The Cruzers were built on a minimalist trail runner last, making them very lightweight and agile, which is great for scrambling around when you need to be confident in every step. The midsole is constructed with EVA and has the feel of a minimalist shoe. It lacks a lot of rock protection, but that wasn’t an issue for me because I wasn’t wearing them during long approaches.
As I mentioned, the Cruzers have a 100% cotton canvas upper with a little extra protection provided by the rubber toe cap. I really like the overlap tongue (see picture below) and the reinforced heel allows the shoe to be worn as a slipper. The cotton upper was not built for really long, rugged, or wet approaches.
If you’re looking for a shoe that can go from crag to town and back, look no further. Not only is the Cruzer more affordable than other approach shoes, but it’s versatile too.
